UGU District
Ugu South Coast Tourism is the destination management organisation of the Ugu district. Ugu, which is Zulu for “coast”, is the southern-most district of KwaZulu-Natal province, South Africa and encompasses four municipalities, Umdoni, Umzumbe, Umuziwabantu and Ray Nkonyeni.
The Ugu District Municipality is situated in Oslo Beach, on the KZN South Coast and its mayor is Cllr Mondli Chiliza. The town of Port Shepstone is the business hub of the district.
The Ugu District borders Ethekwini, which is home to Durban, and starts in Scottburgh in the north, following the 112km coastline to Port Edward in the south, where it borders the Eastern Cape province. Inland the district stretches to Harding, comprising an area of 5 866 km² in total. The district boasts 58 beaches, which represent the highest concentration of beach destinations in South Africa.
The Ugu District has 81 municipal wards and 42 traditional authorities, with a population of approximately 710000, mainly rural. Apart from agriculture, one of the district’s main economic drivers is tourism.
