Ray Nkonyeni Municipality
The most concentrated business hub in the Ugu district, the Ray Nkonyeni municipality was established in 2016 after the merging of the Hibiscus Coast and Izingolweni municipalities. The municipality is named after local freedom fighter, Ray Nkonyeni.
Mayor Nomusa Mqwebu oversees the 1487km™ Ray Nkonyeni Municipality, which has its administrative seat in Port Shepstone.
Some of the destinations within the Ray Nkonyeni Municipality include Hibberdene, Port Shepstone, Shelly Beach, Margate, Ramsgate, Southbroom, Marina Beach, Trafalgar, Leisure Bay, Port Edward, KwaNzimakwe, KwaXolo and Nyandezulu.
Ugu South Coast Tourism is the destination management organisation of the Ugu district. Ugu, which is Zulu for “coast”, is the southern-most district of KwaZulu-Natal province, South Africa and encompasses four municipalities, Umdoni, Umzumbe, Umuziwabantu and Ray Nkonyeni.
The Ugu District Municipality is situated in Oslo Beach, on the KZN South Coast and its mayor is Cllr Mondli Chiliza. The town of Port Shepstone is the business hub of the district.
The Ugu District borders Ethekwini, which is home to Durban, and starts in Scottburgh in the north, following the 112km coastline to Port Edward in the south, where it borders the Eastern Cape province. Inland the district stretches to Harding, comprising an area of 5 866 km² in total. The district boasts 58 beaches, which represent the highest concentration of beach destinations in South Africa.
The Ugu District has 81 municipal wards and 42 traditional authorities, with a population of approximately 710000, mainly rural. Apart from agriculture, one of the district’s main economic drivers is tourism.
Part of KwaZulu-Natal’s Ugu District, Umdoni Municipality is named after the Mdoni indigenous tree. The Mayor of Umdoni Municipality is Cllr Thabani Dube.
The Umdoni Municipality is situated in Scottburgh, centrally located between commercial centres Durban and Port Shepstone. It has 19 wards and stretches inland to uMzinto.
Some of the destinations within the Umdoni area include Scottburgh, Pennington, Park Rynie and Rocky Bay.
Umuziwabantu Municipality is on the western boundary of the Ugu district and borders the Eastern Cape to the south. It is the only municipality within the district that does not form part of the coastline. The municipality is named after the Zulu word that means “the people’s home” or a home where everyone is welcome.
Umuziwabantu has 10 municipal wards and its Mayor is Cllr Dixie Nciki. Its main destinations are Harding and Weza with its beautiful Ingeli forest.
The Umzumbe Municipality is named after the Umzumbe River that runs through the 1 221km² area. Mayor Sizwe Ngcobo oversees the 19 municipal wards of the area, which focuses mainly on agriculture and eco-tourism. The Umzumbe River Trails is currently under development to attract nature and outdoor adventure lovers.
